Tor Browser 14.5 Launches: Stronger Censorship Circumvention and Better Usability on Android

The Tor Project officially released Tor Browser 14.5 on April 16, 2025, marking a significant update for users needing reliable privacy tools in heavily censored environments. The release brings improvements that specifically target mobile usability and accessibility—two key areas in Tor’s mission to enable anonymous browsing worldwide.

A major highlight of this version is the expansion of Connection Assist to Android. This feature automatically locates and connects to working bridges when Tor access is blocked, removing the need for users to manually configure circumvention settings on their mobile devices. Android users in restricted countries now gain the same seamless access as desktop users.

In terms of international accessibility, language support has been extended to include Belarusian, Bulgarian, and Portuguese (Portugal). These additions were made possible through community volunteers and Localization Lab, reflecting Tor’s ongoing efforts to reach users in their native languages.

Other notable changes include improvements to log readability, which help users and support teams more easily diagnose issues with connection or functionality. Also, performance enhancements have been introduced to make the application exit more quickly and cleanly, particularly on Android.

The browser is available for immediate download via the official Tor download page or through the Tor distribution directory.

In line with Tor’s mission to defend digital rights, this release prioritizes privacy and accessibility, giving users under authoritarian regimes a more stable and anonymous browsing experience. The work was backed by continued support from the Tor community and its volunteer infrastructure, demonstrating how decentralized cooperation can counter centralized censorship.
